The Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has slammed a N5 billion libel suit against Sahara Reporters over alleged “defamation of character and wrongful accusation”.

This was according to Senator Melaye’s media office, which noted that the suit was filed on Wednesday at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sahara Reporters had published a news article where it alleged that Melaye did not obtain a degree in Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, as claimed by the senator.

The allegation had prompted the Nigerian Senate to refer the matter to its Ethics and Privileges Committee with a view of unveiling the truth as to whether or not Senator Melaye obtained his first degree certificate from ABU, Zaria.

But the senator maintains that he indeed graduated from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, adding that the allegation by Sahara Reporters was just a mere plot to tarnish his rising political profile.
