The deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has called for the return of schools belonging to churches and other religious organizations to their original owners. He however gave credit to government for building upon the successes on ground before those schools were taken over from their owners.

Dr Ekweremadu stated this at an event in Enugu. According to him, “The handover of schools by the Anambra state government to their original owners saw the state rise from previous 25th and 26th positions on a table of 36 states, to the first position in the National Examination Council (NECO) performance in 2011 and 2013. Such handover of schools should not serve as a ploy by states to evade the responsibility of funding quality education for their citizens.”

He said that Anambra state, under the then Governor Peter Obi, aside returning about 1,040 primary schools to the former owners in 2011, also went ahead to earmark the sum of N6 billion for their smooth operations, after all they were serving the same purpose.
