Enugu Community Tells Igwe, We Have Pressing Needs Than Police Post

A community in Enugu state, Aji in Igbo Eze local government area, has protested to their traditional ruler, Igwe Osisi Itodo, that the community has more pressing needs than a police post.

In a petition to the Igwe-in-Council dated June 11, 2018 and obtained by THE WHISTLER, the community under the aegis of Aji Liberation Movement (ALM), noted that the N5 million recently released by the state government under the Rural Development Fund should be spent on beneficial projects rather than a police post.

The petition written on behalf of the ALM by Dennis Mba and Associates, a legal firm, listed 10 projects the money could be channeled into so as to get the balance of another N5 million from the state government.

In the petition signed by Chief Dennis Mba, the 10 areas the fund could be deployed into are: erosion control, Ulo N’ Aji/Old Nkwo Market Road/MCC Road, Nkwo Aji/Isiugu Road, CCC/Ufodo Road and Aji health center.

Others are: reactivation of Aji water borehole, renovation of Aji civic center, renovation of Central School, Aji, extension of rural electrification and general maintenance.

According to Mba to the Igwe, “you will agree with us that the problems as highlighted above are enormous and begging for attention. We suggest you consider any of the projects enumerated above, instead of a police post for the community.

“Further take notice that the police post remains at the domain of the federal or state governments to fix and may not be as important to the community as any of the projects listed.”

An indigene of Aji, who asked not to be named given the sensitive nature of the issue, queried why have a police post when the main divisional office was less than a kilometer to the community, noting also that “in our village, everybody is her brother’s keeper. We have very little issue of crime because we are security conscious. I hope the Igwe and his council heed wise counsel to avoid undue tension.”
