EPL: Arsenal and Liverpool play out goalless draw

Arsenal are still searching for their first win at home as they played out a thrilling goalless draw with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.

In a game littered with chances, brilliant goalkeeping and defensive mistakes, it was almost beyond belief that neither side could carve out a victory and deliver an early psychological blow among the contenders at the top of the table.

Arsenal were without their regular centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, with the pair missing through illness and injury, and it wasn’t a surprise they were fortunate not to be behind in the first half as the visitors hit the woodwork twice and seeing Petr Cech produce an astonishing save to deny Christian Benteke a clear goal chance.

But Arsenal looked stronger and more coordinated after the break which saw Alexis Sanchez hitting the post and Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet producing a fine reflex save from Olivier Giroud, but Liverpool did enough to return home with a point, which leaves them two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Reacting after the game, the Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers said;

“I thought we were outstanding. We showed everything. You heard Petr Cech getting a round of applause for the saves he made.”

“Overall, we kept a good clean sheet, but we’re disappointed we didn’t win.”

Also speaking, was the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who said his side were unfortunate not to have won the game, but will definitely improve on goal scoring.

“Liverpool had some chances in the first half and nothing in the second.”

“We had chances in both halves and were unlucky because we scored a regular goal that was ruled out and that was very difficult to understand.

“We know we can score goals, but we need to do better in the final third.”
