The former Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Dr. Mohammed Barkindo, has been appointed as the Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Barkindo, who led the NNPC from 2009 to 2010, was appointed during OPEC’s meeting which held today at its Vienna headquarters.

He replaces Libya’s Abdullah el-Badri who is the 27th secretary general of OPEC and has been set to retire since 2013 but stayed on because of the inability of the oil cartel to agree on a new leader.
