Falcons Get N100k Out Of N7.6m

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have reportedly being paid N100,000 [about $200] of the $16,500 owed them by the Federal Government for winning the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Florence Omagbemi’s side defeated the indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun to claim a record 8th African Women Cup of Nations, AWCON, title earlier this month.

Since arriving the country, the Nigerian women have been denied their bonuses and allowances accumulating to $16,500 per player, and since then the players have embarked on a sit-in-protest to get their money.

A top official from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, who confirmed the payment of N100,000 to each member of the team, said the money was meant for transportation, adding that their outstanding debts will be paid in few days.

However, the ladies held to their initial stand not to vacate their Agura Hotel base in the Federal Capital Territory until they get their full pay.

One of the players, who pleaded anonymity told Goal: “We got 100,000 naira but we were told it is part of our money. So, we are still here until we hear from the sports minister.”
