Fernando Hierro Appointed Spain Coach

Former Real Madrid Captain Fernando Hierro will assume the position of national coach of Spain for the World Cup in Russia, Spanish FA has announced.

Hierro, who held the role of sporting director, has stepped in following Julen’s Lopetegui’s sack following his appointment as Madrid manager on Tuesday.

The former Real Madrid defender will then take charge of his first training session ahead of Spain’s World Cup opener against Portugal on Friday.

“Fernando Hierro will assume the position of national coach in the World Championship of Russia and will appear before the media accompanied by the president RFEF, Luis Rubiales,” a statement from the Spanish Football Federation read.

“Next, he will direct his first training and on Friday he will debut in SOchi at the match of Spain against Portugal.”

Hierro won 89 caps for Spain between 1989 and 2002, will be presented to the press at 6:30 p.m. local time at the Krasnodar Stadium, Russia.
