FG Revokes Firearms Licenses, Orders Return Of All Arms Within 21 Days

As part of its efforts to mop up prohibited and illegal firearms from wrong hands, the Nigerian government has revoked all firearms licenses in the country.

This was according to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Jimoh Moshood, who made this known on Monday while appearing on AIT’s Kakaaki.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, had recently ordered the commencement of “mopping up, seizure and recovery of prohibited and other illegal firearms and ammunition, weapons and devices” from wrong hands in the country.

IGP Idris had given this order to the Commissioners of Police of all State Commands as well as that of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and their supervising Assistant Inspectors General of Police of the Twelve Zonal Commands in the Country.

The order followed a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari for all arms to be mopped up in efforts by the government to address the security challenges in the country and the recent kidnap of about 110 girls from the Government Secondary School in Dapchi, Yobe State.

Speaking during the television programme this morning, the Force PRO said “Our short, medium and long-term security action plans have been yielding positive results, we appeal for calm on the missing school girls as all Security Chiefs in the country are on top of the situation.

“All Pump action guns of all categories and other prohibited firearms are to be returned to the Police within 21days. No firearm licence will be issued or recognized,” said Jimoh.

The Force equally said on its official Twitter page (@PoliceNG) that “Mopping up prohibited firearms and illegal weapons across the country will further compliment Police efforts to guarantee the safety and security of the General Public – Members of the public are implored to cooperate with the Police and report anyone violating the Firearms Act.”

If what the Force PRO said during the TV programme was any indication, the Nigerian government has equally placed embargo on the issuance of gun licenses to private citizens in the country.
