FG Rubbishes UN’s Claim On Boko Haram

The Federal Government has described as “a mere conjecture,” statement that it gave insurgent group Boko Haram a large ransom to release the over 100 schoolgirls kidnapped from a secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State in February.

The statement was contained in the 22nd report by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team of the United Nations’ Security Council.

The UN had accused the Federal government of lying to the world that it did not pay a dime to secure the release of the abducted Dapchi Girls.

“Contrary to the claim by the Nigerian government through the Information Minister Lai Mohammed, the government paid a “large ransom” to free scores of female students kidnapped by the Boko Haram from their school in Dapchi, Yobe State, earlier this year,” the report read.

But in a statement issued in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Thursday, Mohammed insisted that the government did not pay any ransom to secure the release of the Dapchi girls.

He said: “It is not enough to say that Nigeria paid a ransom, little or huge. There must be a conclusive evidence to support such claim. Without that, the claim remains what it is: a mere conjecture.”
