FIFA Ranking: Nigeria Steps Up As Brazil Regains Top Spot

Nigeria have moved up one place to 40th best footballing nation in the world, according to latest Fifa/Coca-Cola World Ranking released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles are fifth in Africa behind leaders, Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

The latest improvement points to the team’s display in their 1-1 international friendly draw against Senegal in London, last month.

Gernot Rohr’s men were ranked 41st in March ranking.

On the global scene, Brazil returned to top of the ranking after a seven-year wait. World Cup qualifying wins over Uruguay and Paraguay in booking their place at Russia 2018 put the resurgent Selecao top for the first time since the 2010 World Cup with 1,661 points.

After losing Lionel Messi to a four-match ban, Argentina lost 2-0 at Bolivia last week and dropped to No. 2.

World Cup winner Germany is still No. 3, followed by Chile and Colombia.

European champion Portugal is No. 8, while Switzerland entered the top 10, up two to ninth, one ahead of above Spain.

Poland were one of six teams to record highest ranking in 11th place and Macedonia were the biggest movers when they climbed 33 spots into 133rd.

The next Fifa World Ranking will be published on 4 May 2017.
