World football governing body, FIFA has suspended Benin Football Federation (BFF) from global football events after a court ruling in the country blocked upcoming elections.

This was a resolve at the inaugural FIFA council meeting currently holding in Mexico.

A statement from FIFA said: “In accordance with art. 38 of the FIFA Statutes, the Benin Football Association (FBF) was suspended with immediate effect due to a recent injunction by a local judicial court which impeded the holding of the due election.”

This means that Les Écureuils – who are currently second in Group C, are set to miss June and September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Equatorial Guinea and group-leaders Mali respectively.

A court ruling in Benin on Wednesday, May 4 prevented the FBF from holding presidential elections and the suspension will be lifted once a new Executive Committee has been installed.
