Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has retired from professional football, after a 26-year-long illustrious career.

The 65-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United last May.

Despite many lucrative offers from abroad, the Dutchman said some “events in his family” have persuaded him into making the decision.

He recently also received an offer to manage a club in Asia where he would have earned £44 million in just three seasons.

The move comes a day after the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager received a lifetime achievement award from the Dutch government.

“Last year, I said I was going to quit, but later I changed it and I said I would take a sabbatical. Now, I believe I will not return any more. So many things have happened in my family recently, so that really was a wakeup call and it put everything into perspective,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying.

Reports have it that last month one of Van Gaal’s daughters lost her husband, and that has weighed heavily on his decision.
