The former Chelsea and England midfielder was one of 20 applicants for the job and becomes Derby’s seventh appointment in just over three years.

The East Midlands club, who lost to Fulham in the Championship play-off semi-finals, have been without a manager since Gary Rowett left to take over at Stoke City last week.

“This is my first job as a manager, but I’ve worked closely with some of the best coaches in the game and I’m confident in my own abilities and those of the team around me, including the board.

“I know it won’t be easy — managing a football team never is — but I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I’ve always wanted to manage a club with a big tradition and history like Derby County, so this is a huge opportunity,” Lampard said.

The 39-year-old’s career spans over 20 years after starting his career at West Ham, moving to Chelsea for £11m in 2001 and had 13 successful years at Stamford Bridge before later going on to play for Manchester City and New York City prior to his retirement in February 2017.

Lampard emerged as one of the most successful players of his generation and he was three-time player of the year for the Blues, he’s also the club’s top goal scorer, with 211 in all competitions.

He had a trophy-laden career with four FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League titles.

Internationally, he made 106 appearances for England, and represented the Three Lions at three World Cup finals and Euro 2004.
