Ghana Imports 30 Million Condoms Yearly – Commission

No less than 30 million condoms are being imported into Ghana yearly, the country’s commission responsible for HIV/AIDS eradication has revealed.

The Ghana AIDS Commission, however, decried the situation in the country where citizens who are not married constantly have unprotected sex.

The commission’s acting Director of Technical Services, Mr Cosmos Ohene-Adjei, at a recent workshop organised by the African Centre for Development in Accra, said condom usage among Ghanaians is on the low side.

Ohene-Adjei said for the country to be able to eradicate the epidemic before its 2020 set date, Ghanaian singles must cultivate the habit of practising safe sex.

According to him, “more than 290,000 Ghanaians were living with HIV, but only 104,000 out of the figure were on treatment,” as of 2016.

The country is estimated to have a population of 28.21 million as of 2016.
