Ghanaian FA Chief, Referees Caught Taking Bribe (VIDEO)

A BBC documentary series reveals shocking footage of over 100 referees and top officials taking cash gifts before matches in Ghana.

The documentary which is a product of a two-year undercover investigation of journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, reveals that over 150 payments were made in total and they occurred before Ghanaian Premiere League, the Champions League, the West African Regional championships WAFU and other major international competitions.

In the video, Kwesi Nyantakyi, the president of Ghanaian Football Association who is the only Ghanaian to be on the FIFA Council after four decades, was filmed taking a gift of $65,000 from journalists with the belief that they were meeting to discuss a sponsorship deal.

However, the Ghanaian apex football body has disassociated itself from the reports, claiming they are false and mere fabrications and that Nyantakyi has not resigned as a member of the FIFA Council.

A statement by Communications Director of Ghana FA Sannie Dara on Thurday said: “It’s not true that President Kwesi Nyantakyi has resigned as a member of the FIFA Council. Those reports are false.

“The same people yesterday reported that Kurt Okraku has been appointed GFA Vice President which had no iota of truth.

“Kindly discard the report. President Nyantakyi is still a FIFA Council member,” Dara added.

FIFA told the BBC that it is investigating the report.

Recall that Ghanaian referee Joseph Odartei Lamptey was banned for life by FIFA, after he was found guilty of influencing the result of the 2018 World Cup qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal in November 2017.

Lamptey incorrectly awarded a penalty which helped South Africa win by 2-1, the first of their goals from a spot-kick awarded by Lamptey for a handball that never was.
