GTB, EcoBank, Others Bag African Awards

Some Nigerian Banks at the just concluded yearly African Banker Awards, gained global recognition.

The bankers award which was held on the sidelines of the yearly meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) took place in Ahmedabad, India, on Tuesday.

According to Omar Ben Yedder, the Publisher of African Banker, the awards was introduced to recognise reforms, rapid modernisation and expansion of banking and finance in Africa.

The President of Africa Export-Import Bank (AfreximBank), Dr. Benedict Oramah, emerged Banker of the Year, just as the regional institution under his watch grew considerably in the past year, with other metrics like income and cost ratio were very competitive.

Guaranty Trust Bank, Nigeria, was named the African Bank of the Year; Rameswurlall Basant Roi of Mauritius, as Central Bank Governor of the Year; and Rand Merchant Bank, South Africa, as the Investment Bank of the Year.

Other winners include MasterCard and Ecobank for innovation in banking; Waheed Olagunju of the Bank of Industry, as African Banker Icon; and Amadou Ba, Minister of Finance of Senegal, as the Finance Minister of the Year.
