Hijab Controversy: Amasa Firdaus Called To Bar Seven Months After

Seven months after Amasa Firdaus sparked controversy for challenging the restriction on use of hijab during call-to-bar ceremonies, the law graduate has now been called to bar.

She was called to bar on Tuesday, in a ceremony attended by close friends and family.

The latest development comes after the body of benchers responsible for calling law graduates to bar, approved the use of hijab as proper dress code.

Recall that in December, Firdaus was denied access into the International Conference Centre, Abuja, where the call to bar ceremony took place, for refusing to remove her hijab.

Reacting, she described the action as a violation of her rights, adding that she wore the hijab to the ceremony to challenge the status quo.

“Actually there are no rules preventing us from wearing hijabs. They just call it convention that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it,” she had said.

Her refusal was publicly condemned by Muslim bodies in the country, including the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).
