Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has admitted he is scared of the day he will retire from football.

The 66-year-old, who is yet to commit his future to the North London club has just one year left on his contract at the Emirates, and he is expected to celebrate his 20th anniversary as Gunners boss in October.

Likening himself to his long-time rival and former Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, the Frenchman said he won’t just walk away from football as Ferguson did.

“It’s been my life and, quite honestly, I’m scared of the day. Because the longer I wait, the more difficult it will be to lose the addiction,” Wenger said, in a new book, Game Changers, by former Charlton boss Alex Curbishley.

“After Alex [Ferguson] retired and we played them over there he sent a message to me to come up and have a drink with him.

“I asked ‘Do you miss it?’ He said, ‘Not at all’. I didn’t understand that. It’s an emptiness in your life, especially when you’ve lived your whole life waiting for the next game and trying to win it.

“Our pleasure comes from that – and our social attitude as well.”

The Arsenal boss has come under pressure in recent weeks as fans have reacted angrily to his lack of investment in the transfer market, compared to other Premier League rivals, like Manchester City and Manchester United.

Despite call for his resignation from some sections of the fans, the Gunners boss has remained defiant over his transfer policy.

Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, remains Wenger’s only high-profile signing this season, however recent injury crises in the club may force the Frenchman to enter the market before the close of the transfer window next week.
