The transition committee chairman of Igbo-Eze South LGA in Enugu state, Dr Fidelis Odo, said the council under his leadership would ensure timely payment of facilitators of non-formal education in the area in compliance with the state government’s directives for the resumption of the programme.

Odo, who made the statement during a courtesy visit by a team from Enugu State Agency for Mass Education (SAME), said being a lover of education, he would ensure the success of the programme in the area so that those who were not able to be educated formally would do so through non-formal education opportunities.

He said part of the reasons why the programme could not succeed in the past was lack of payment of the approved stipends to the facilitators, adding that his administration would not toe such line.

“We will resume the non-formal education programme in Igbo Eze South LGA with four centres spread across the three development centres and one centre at the council headquarters Ibagwa for secondary non-formal education. The centres will have six facilitators each and a supervisor to monitor the success of the programme in the designated centres. We will also have a coordinator to coordinate the affairs of the programme in the council area.”

He commended the SAME officials for championing the resumption of the literacy programme across the state, adding that God would give them the required grace to achieve the desired objectives.

The programme director of Enugu State Agency for Mass Education, Mrs Ifeoma Onyia, said the visit was to measure the extent of compliance to the non-formal education in the council area and to ascertain the challenges being experienced in the centres. Onyia promised to provide necessary information and materials needed to ensure success of the programme in the area.

The high point of the event was the unveiling of writing materials and dusters purchased by the council to be distributed to each of the centres of the programme.
