Intending Couples To Take Mandatory Genotype, HIV Tests – Sokoto Govt

The Sokoto State Government has said it will mandate would-be couples to take HIV and genotype tests before marriage.

This was according to the state’s commissioner of health, Balarabe Kakale, who made this known on Sunday during observation of the 2017 World Sickle Awareness Day in Sokoto.

Kakale said his ministry would sponsor a private bill to the state House of Assembly that will ensure the new development does not contravene cultural and Islamic ideologies.

The development, according to Kakale, is part of moves by the Governor Aminu Tabuwal administration to check sickle cell disease in the state.

The commissioner said grooms would also be mandated to include long lasting insecticide treated nets as part of bridal requirements.

He further said state government would ensure couples enroll for the state community contributory health scheme.
