Jega Kicks Against Elections Reordering

Ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has questioned the power of the National Assembly to alter the sequence of the 2019 general elections.

Jega, in a statement at an event organised by the Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth and Development in Abuja, on Thursday, said the reorganising of the election sequence would cost the country more if implemented.

The amendments will make the federal lawmakers’ election to come up first, followed by that of state lawmakers and governors, and lastly the presidential election.

The former INEC boss said several sections of the 1999 Constitution clearly states that the power to organise and set the date for elections remain the exclusive preserve of INEC.
