There were reports published by the media that Jonathan had escaped to Cote d’Ivoire for fear of being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over corruption charges.

But a statement issued by the former president on the 23rd of May dismissed the reports as untrue and false, added that he was spending several weeks abroad on a multi-city speaking tour in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Côte d’Ivoire among others.

“I’m not on exile. I have no cause to go on exile. It is a wicked and malicious report,” Jonathan had said.
