Journalist Faces Death Sentence Over Article On Condom

Ms Shamail Alnour, a female Sudanese journalist may face death sentence over an article she wrote on the role of condom in preventing HIV/Aids, The East African reports.

Alnour is being accused by a radical Islamic leader, Mohamed Ali Algizoli of apostasy – a state of total renunciation of one’s religions faith or principles, which is punishable by death sentence in Sudan.

Algizoli, during a Friday sermon, further called on authorities in the country to prosecute the journalist for going against Islamic values by promoting the use of condoms.

But journalists in the country are said to have spoken for Alnour by staging solidarity campaigns against her prosecution.

Al-Gizouli had, at a time, been reportedly prohibited from publicly preaching Islam after he openly supported activities of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq.

Sudan is a North African and third largest country in Africa which comprises of about 97% Muslims and 3% Christians and African Traditional Religion.
