Kano Electoral Commission Denies Reports Of Underage Voting, ‘We’ll Be Vindicated’

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has denied reports of underage voting in the recently held local government election in Kano state.

This comes two days after the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC), set up a panel to investigate reports of underage voting in the recent local government election which the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in all the local government areas.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who made this known at a workshop in Lagos on Friday, said the panel, which will be made public, will get to the root of the images of children below 18 years participating as voters during the poll.

The INEC Chairman said this in the light of the outrage by Nigerians on social media calling for probe into the matter.

Reacting on Sunday, Garba Sheka, chairman of the commission, expressed willingness to work with INEC to investigate the claims.

Sheka said the election was adjudged the most peaceful in the history of the state.

“We are also confident that the outcome of the investigation will vindicate us and strengthen the confidence of the public in KANSIEC to conduct free and fair local government election,” the KANSIEC chairman said.

“As the only statutory body that registers voters and keeps the database of certified Nigerian electorate, we would like to express our willingness to accord full cooperation to the team of investigators to ascertain the veracity of the allegation made in respect of underage voting during the conduct of the election.

“While we hail the INEC’s decision to investigate the allegation, we want to restate our stand that the election, which was supervised by independent monitors (civil society organisations) is adjudged most peaceful in the history of Kano state.”
