Lack Of Sleep Ruins Social Life

A new study has revealed that insufficient sleep makes one lonely and in turn drains their social life.

According to lead author Matthew Walker at the University of California, people who are deprived of their sleep will not only be victims of under-eye bags, but more likely feel lonelier and less interested to interact with others.

“We humans are a social species. Yet sleep deprivation can turn us into social lepers,” said the author and UC Berkeley professor of psychology and neuroscience.

“The less sleep you get, the less you want to socially interact.

“In turn, other people perceive you as more socially repulsive, further increasing the grave social-isolation impact of sleep loss,” Walker added.

“That vicious cycle may be a significant contributing factor to the public health crisis that is loneliness.”

The study published in the Nature Communications Journal is the first to show a two-way relationship between sleep loss and becoming socially irritated, with a focus on the loneliness epidemic.
