Lai Mohammed Speaks On Probe Of Obasanjo’s $16bn Power Project

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has opened up on the alleged investigation on former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had queried the alleged mismanagement of $16 billion electricity fund by the Obasanjo led government.

Obasanjo, shortly after, raised an alarm accusing Buhari of plotting to “hang a crime on him”, as part of plots to indefinitely arrest him.

However, in an attempt to clarify the situation, Mohammed during an interview with The Cable said he does not think the former believes that he is being investigated by President Buhari.

According to him, Obasanjo’s outcry on alleged plans to arrest him was all in a bid to divert the attention of Nigerians from the declaration of June 12 as democracy day.

He said, “I don’t not think Obasanjo himself believes that anybody is investigating him at all.

“I think when he made that statement, it was just to cleverly divert attention from the ground shaking declaration proclamation of Mr President declaring June 12 democracy day, and honouring MKO Abiola and Gani Fawehinmi posthumously and also honoring the running mate to Abiola.

“The truth of the matter is that by that single master stroke, the president had written his name in gold as a statesman and as a man with inclusive credentials and I think what Obasanjo tried to do by self-allegation that he is being persecuted and will be jailed, I think it was just too distracting.

When asked if he was implying that the former president was not being investigated by the Buhari administration, the Information Minister said “frankly speaking, I wouldn’t know”.
