As part of the terms in its 10-year agreement kit deal with Adidas, Manchester United will incur a £22.5m financial penalty if it fails to secure a top four finish in this Champions League season.

It would be recalled that United, under Louis van Gaal, had failed to finish in the top four positions in last season.

ESPN FC learnt that Man-U will suffer a 30% cut in their annual £75m payment from Adidas if they fail to qualify for Champions League after two failed attempts.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League will see United pay a catch-up penalty fee of £4.5m for the first two years of the agreement and then suffer a deduction of £2.25m annually over the full 10 years of the contract.

Meanwhile Jose Mourinho’s team is expected face Arsenal at Old Trafford this Saturday.
