No fewer than 61 Boko Haram suspects have died in detention at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, Borno state, due to Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) outbreak in the state.

Sources at the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri told The Cable that the military has ordered the conduction of mass burial for the deceased as the morgue at the medical facility had been overstretched.

Although workers at the morgue resisted conduction of mass burial for corpses with no autopsy records, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) however went ahead with the funeral on orders of the military.

“Majority of the deaths were said to be due to the heat in the military facility, while some deaths were tied to meningitis,” the source said.

THE WHISTLER recalls that about 1.3 million vaccines had earlier arrived Nigeria courtesy of the World Health Organization (WHO) after over 328 deaths associated with Meningitis were recorded in parts of the country.
