‘N1.3bn Fraud’: EFCC Clarifies Tweet On Fayose

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made clear its intention to try Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for alleged N1.3 billion fraud after his tenure in office.

This follows EFCC’s controversial tweet on July 15, 2018, where it threatened to “dust off” Governor Fayose’s alleged corruption file from its shelve as he will no longer have immunity after leaving office on October 16.

The anti-graft agency’s tweet, which it has now deleted, had read, “The party is over; The cloak of immunity torn apart, and the staff broken. Ekiti Integrated Poultry Project/Biological Concepts Limited N1.3bn fraud case file dusted off the shelves. See you soon.”

The EFCC tweeted this after the governor’s anointed candidate in the just held Ekiti gubernatorial election, Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, lost to candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Kayode Fayemi, at the poll.

Reaffirming its eagerness to jump on Fayose’s alleged corruption case, the anti-corruption agency’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Monday: “While it is true that there is a subsisting criminal charge against Governor Fayose, the fate of the charge will be determined by the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, at the expiration of his tenure, not the EFCC.”

THE WHISTLER reports that Governor Fayose had always attacked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari whenever he deemed fit.

The governor had also recently announced his decision to contest against President Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.
