Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, on Wednesday, told the Nigerian Senate that he won’t be honouring his invitation to appear before them on Thursday.

Babachir was slated to appear before the senate ad hoc committee on the humanitarian crisis in the north-east, but turned down the invitation in a letter he wrote the panel.

THE WHISTLER recalls that comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali, had today (Wednesday) failed to appear before the upper legislative house, saying he had gone to court to challenge his compulsion to wear the customs uniform.

Following Ali’s suit, Baba wrote to chairman of the committee, Shehu Sani, saying he had also gone to court to challenge his invitation.

“I wish to kindly request that you draw the attention of other members of the committee that I will not be able to appear before the committee primarily because I have gone to court to challenge the invitation among others,” he wrote.

The SGF’s invitation followed allegations of corruption levelled against him in an investigation carried out  by the Senate In December 2016.

The investigation revealed that Lawal allegedly swindled the government out of whooping of N270 million in a  “contract scam” at the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in the north-east.
