Messi opened the scoring in the first half for the South Americans, but the lead was cancelled out by a Victor Moses penalty early in the second half.

The equalizer gave Nigeria some momentum but Argentina pressed and got the vital goal in the 86th minute. Manchester United defender Rojo surged into the area to place Gabriel Mercado’s cross into the bottom corner.

“We were confident that we would win this game. It’s wonderful to have won it this way. It is a well-deserved joy.

“I knew that God is with us and he was not going to leave us out. I thank all the people who are here, for all their sacrifice, and all those who are in Argentina who were always with us. The shirt of the National Team is above all,” Argentina captain Lionel Messi said.
