The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, has dismissed the allegation made by Amnesty International that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives engage in torture of suspects in their custody in order to extort money from the victims.

Amnesty International had released a report on September 21, 2016, where it exposed alleged corrupt dealings of members of the SARS.

“Nigeria Police Force condemns in all its entity every element of torture in the conduct of police operations in this country. And we have units on the ground to check some of these excesses,” Idris reacted in an interview with Al Jazeera.

“I can assure you that in the Nigeria Police Force, we have all units. Every unit has codes of conduct, which is distributed among the officers. And we have the units that check the excesses of our officers.

“I can assure you that the Nigeria Police Force has never ever been involved in any element of torture in all its activities in the cause of their investigation all over the country.

“In reality, some of the allegations by the Amnesty International highlighted in their report, we investigated them thoroughly and came to a very definite conclusion that some of these allegations are false,” the IGP added.
