German Football Association has handed a three-match ban to FSV Mainz and Nigerian international Leon Balogun for violent conduct in his side’s recent 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Video replay showed the Super Eagles defender deliberately kneeling Frankfurt’s Carlos Zambrano towards the end of the match. Neither of them was cautioned or sent off by the referee.

The 27-year-old has been suspended from all club activities for the duration of the ban as he has 24 hours to appeal.

Balogun will now miss the rest of Mainz’ games this season against Hamburger SV, Stuttgart and Hertha Berlin.

The defender has played 23 games in all competition for Mainz who are sixth on the Bundesliga table with 45 points from 31 matches. He is also among the 26 Super Eagles players invited by coach Salisu Yusuf for Nigeria’s international friendly games against Mali and Luxembourg next month.
