‘No Truce’ As Another Meeting Between FG, ASUU Ends In Deadlock

Another attempt on Thursday by the Federal Government to reach truce with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the union’s nationwide strike has failed.

Today’s meeting, which began at about 3:42 p.m. in Abuja, ended in deadlock just as the government failed to meet the demands of ASUU in an earlier meeting.

At Thursday’s meeting, the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige accused ASUU of not following due procedure in commencing the strike.

“There must be a mandatory letter of 15 days to labour, to education before going on strike,” he said, referring to the ministries of labour and education.

“All agreements are supposed to be domiciled in ministry of labour in order to track implementation as agreement gives room to renegotiation,” said Ngige.

But ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, responded by saying, “There was a letter dated July 10 to inform the major stakeholders. In the last 10 months, we’ve written 10 letters trying to reach out to relevant stakeholders after suspending the seven days warning strike in November last year.

“This is not a fresh action and we are open to suggestions,” said Ogunyemi.

ASUU chairman was said to have insisted that the strike continues after both sides failed get on the same page.
