`Not Too Young To Run’ Bill Opposed By NUJ Chairman

The `Not Too Young To Run’ bill recently passed by the National Assembly has been opposed by the Sokoto State chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Isah Abubakar-Shuni.

Abubakar-Shuni opposed the bill on Friday on the grounds that it may lead to “proliferation of godfatherism“ in Nigerian politics.

The NUJ boss, in an interview with newsmen, said maturity and experience were a prerequisite for holding leadership positions such as that of a governor.

He said, “How can you imagine a 25-year-old person becoming a state governor and expect good positive administration.

“It might lead to proliferation of godfatherism in politics where young people will be sponsored and after being elected to be controlled by the God fathers who spent on them,” said Abubakar-Shuni.

The NUJ chairman further called on the legislature to screen out some sensitive positions in the bill.
