The 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season will commence on December 18, and end July 9, 2017, the chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) Shehu Dikko has said.

The LMC boss made this disclosure while he was a guest on the Nigeria Support Platform – popular social media group.

Dikko, who is also the second vice-chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), explained that the decision for the early league kick off was to help clubs going to CAF competitions in February next year, have some game time before the commencement of the tournament.

“As for next season’s commencement, our target now is to start December 18 and end July 9 while our Super 4 should start December 5-11. We also envisage starting 2018 season by the end of August 2017,” Dikko said.

“All clubs already have the schedule and planning. We have already sent out a draft schedule to our clubs as we normally do and once we have our AGM we take off.

“Also to align our calendar to Europe by end of 2017 season, which would be hugely beneficial for us both in terms of organisation, planning, and even finances. Get out clubs going to CAF competitions to play at least 13 to 15 games before the start of CAF (tournament) in February 2017.

“All clubs are back and planning for next season so I believe we are on track. This is something we discussed since the last AGM in February before the 2016 season starts.”
