The governor also donated a luxury bus to the supporters club of Rivers United to ease their transport problems.

“You have done well and we (the Rivers State Government) would have done more if you had won the league title. Each of the players and every member of the management team will receive five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) while the technical manager, Stanley Eguma will receive one million naira,” he said.

To ensure that Rivers United continue their good form at their maiden CAF Champions League next season, Governor Wike further approved a pre-season camp for the team in Spain.

Wike, who said he is a Real Madrid fan explained that the reason for the teams exposure was to help them win the continental tournament next year.

“I’m a Real Madrid fan, I don’t hide it. They are a club that always win trophies every season,” Wike stated.

“It is either they win the La Liga, Cope Del Rey or the UEFA Champions League.

“I want Rivers United to win the 2017 Caf Champions League title and to facilitate this, I want to see that our boys are exposed by going for their training outside the country. The team will go to Madrid because Real Madrid has a culture of winning titles on a consistent basis,” Wike added.

He commended Coach Imama Amakakabo for helping Enugu Rangers to a first league trophy in 32-years but dismissed reports he will be recalled back to Rivers State.

In his words, “As far as I’m concerned, Rivers State won the first and second positions in the league.

“Friday night when I spoke with my Enugu State counterpart, I told him not to be afraid that we’re not recalling Imama.

“For now he should be there until any time in future when we may want him.”
