Nsukka Residents Mourn Gov Ugwuanyi’s Chief Press Secretary

Residents of Nsukka in Enugu State have expressed shock and sadness over the death of Mr Uwakwe Abugu, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor of the state.

The people expressed their feelings in separate interview with newsmen in Nsukka on Thursday.

They described his death as painful and a great loss to Enugu state government as well as to the media industry.

Mr Fabian Onah, the Chairman of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in Nsukka Local Government Area, said he received the news of the death of the CPS with sadness, surprise and shock.

Onah described the deceased as a dedicated and patriotic citizen who used his wealth of experience in journalism to serve the government and people of Enugu state.

“Enugu state has lost a dedicated and patriotic citizen who had the fear of God in the discharge of his duties.

“May God grant Gov. Mr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who appointed him a media aide, the family and the people of the state the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

Mr Harrison Ogara, the Publisher of Starlite, a community newspaper, said Abugu’s death had robbed the media industry of a fine journalist.

Ogara urged the state government and the family to take solace in the fact that he died a dedicated, honest and patriotic citizen while serving his fatherland.

“If I’m in a dream and someone tells me Abugu will die in the next twenty years I will not believe it.

“I don”t know why good people do not last; the media industry in Nigeria has lost a fine journalist and an icon.

“May God grant the soul of Abugu eternal rest,” the Managing Director of Enugu State Gaming Commission said.

Rev Fr Chuma Nnamene, former Director of Communication in Nsukka Catholic Diocese, said he was shocked to hear that the CPS had died.

Nnamene described the deceased as a simple, humble, intelligent and God-fearing person and prayed God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

“Death is inevitable and that is why we must be ready at all time since we do not know when it will come.

“My prayer is that God will grant his soul eternal rest as well as give his family the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said.

Abugu, who was appointed CPS by Ugwuanyi in 2015, died on Monday in a hospital in India after a protracted illness.

Before his appointment he was the Bureau Chief of the New Telegraph newspaper in the South-East.
