Okorocha Announces Plans To Unveil Statue Of Liberian President

Rochas Okorocha, Imo State governor has announced plans to unveil a statue in honour of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia.

Okorocha made the announcement on Wednesday, saying the Liberian leader is expected to arrive Imo State on a two-day working visit from Thursday, November 9.

Her statue is at Freedom Square on Wetheral Road in Owerri, the state capital.

This is coming about three weeks after the governor erected a statue of President Jacob Zuma of South Africa.

Zuma’s 30-feet statue was said to have cost N520 million.

Rather than welcome the gesture, Nigerians lashed out at the governor for honouring Zuma who is facing over 700 cases of corruption in his country.

However, in the heat of the attacks, Okorocha revealed he would erect more statues in the state

“And in case these “Galatians” do not know not all we need to do to attract good things or investments to Imo is erecting statues, then, we have no option than to erect as many of such structures as possible,” he had said in a statement issued on his behalf by his chief press secretary Sam Onwuemeodo.

“We owe no one apology. Rochas made a promise to open the doors of Imo to the rest of the world, for good and he is doing that and we cannot be deterred by these enemies of our people.”
