About 5,300 houses have been ruined after a disastrous flood hit six local government areas, LGAs, in Kano State.

The flood affected Bebeji, Dawakin Kudu, Kiru, Shanono, Bagwai and Garun-Malam LGAs of the north eastern state.

This was revealed on Monday, 8th August, by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, Alhaji Aliyu Bashir, during an interview with newsmen.

Bashir also revealed that the state government is already working toward providing relief materials to those affected by the flood.

He said: “In Dawakin Kudu alone, more than 2,300 houses were affected, while more than 600 houses in each of the remaining five areas were destroyed by the flood.”

“At the moment, we are compiling a comprehensive report on the disaster for onward submission to the Federal and State Governments for necessary assistance to the victims,” he added.

Recall that the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani Sidi, had warned of imminent flooding in communities along the River Niger, following a report the agency received from authorities in the Republic of Niger.

NEMA had advised that inhabitants of communities bothering the River Niger be evacuated to avoid the disasters likely to accompany the flood.

The agency gathered that the present water level in the River Niger had reached a critical altitude that it might replicate the kind of disastrous flood that killed 363 people and displaced over 2,100,000 Nigerians in 2012 in states like ‎Adamawa, Taraba, Plateu, Benue, amongst others.
