In its quest to become Africa’s number one online shopping platform, Payporte in partnership with internet browser Opera Mini, has launched its free internet give away service for Nigerians.
The service is available to hundreds of thousands of Nigerians on the Airtel network.
initiative was revealed at the launch of this service by the Managing Director Payporte Mr. Bassey Eyo, who said the company is doing everything in their power to make the internet more accessible to users. He added that the company is partnering Opera mini because it is the best technology to make this happen.
“This is an online store and we are helping people get online. We hope to be the best online shopping platform in Africa. We are equally trying to stimulate the market to help more people get online. We want it to be the most preferred E- commerce platform on this part of the world. It is also a way of pushing internet penetration, access and corporate social responsibility,
“We chose Opera mini because they have the best technology to make this happen. It is also a way of making people shop with ease,” he said.
Payporte is giving out 100,000 days of free internet every month for six months, and another interesting aspect of this is that a person can sponsor another person’s data, as the package comes in opera sponsored web pass.
Applauding the initiative, Vice president Opera Software, Africa, Richard Monday said it will increase the number of internet users in the country.
“We are excited to work with Payporte and our operator partners in Nigeria to help bring more people online.”
The business development manager of Opera Mini, Murray Spark who described the service as the most innovative, said , “We are happy to be associated with Payporte as it is actually thinking out of the box. We have 23 million active users in Nigeria so this is our own way of making internet access comprehensive and affordable by packaging the web differently.
“The opera sponsored web pass enables brands to sponsor no-cost internet access through mobile operators to provide their customers with easy-to-understand methods of accessing the net.”
“The Opera software also enables users shop online with confidence without running out of data. To have a free entry to the web, all you have a data enabled device.
“We are working with big brands of the telecommunications companies to help monetise their data. We view internet access as a universal right. It is also a way of reinforcing the Payporte platform and also, helping in internet penetration. The approach is most innovative.”
Recent statistics indicates that Nigeria leads Africa in online shopping, despite data usage relatively low in comparison to mobile penetration in the country, which is a more reason the free internet initiative is a welcome development.
