Leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers cannot stop Amaechi’s screening.
Speaking to Senate Correspondents on Wednesday, Senator Ndume who said that that Amaechi’s screening will be based on constitutionality, insisted that the PDP senators cannot disqualify him (Amaechi) based on trivialities.
He said, “We are practicing democracy in a changed environment. That is to allow the minorities to have their say. But you know that the majority will always have its way.”
“We have 58 senators, the Senate president excluded, and they have 48 senators. Amaechi is an APC member and the constitution is very clear. Until there is conviction, you are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt by a competent court of law”, he added.
The screening of Amaechi has been shifted three times by the Senate, allegedly because of the petitions filed against him by his people.
However, the senate will resume plenary today (Thursday) to continue the ministerial screening.
The Senate had on Tuesday, screened two ministerial nominees from Oyo and Yobe States – Mr Adebayo Shittu and Mrs Khadija Abba Ibrahim.
It was gathered that Amaechi would be screened today, alongside some others, but there are speculations that the former Rivers governor’s screening by the senate will again be postponed.
