Petroleum Tanker Drivers Begin Nationwide Strike

The Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD) arm of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), have commenced a nationwide indefinite strike, shutting down depots and fuel terminals till further notice.

Mr. Salimon Oladiti, National Chairman of PTD, who disclosed this yesterday, said that there was no going back on the strike action as it was decided by the organs of the union.

The Tankers Drivers are protesting non-renewal of their Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA, that expired three years ago, deplorable conditions of nation’s high ways, alleged harassment by security officials, especially Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and plans by Capital Oil Plc to declare 2000 members redundant due to its unresolved issue with Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC.

Oladiti said “There is no going back. The strike is definitely going ahead as planned and it will be total because all loading depots and fuel terminals will be shut down. We have fully mobilized and sensitized all members.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Friday tried to intervene to avert the strike action as planned to no avail.
