Barcelona defender Gerard Pique announced on Monday that he will quit international football after the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, following criticisms over his support for Catalonia independence.

The 29-year-old came under immense attack after Spain’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Albania on Sunday, after he reportedly removed the Spanish national colours from his playing strip.

He was instantly criticized in the Spanish media for the act, with many accusing him of bias.

“The World Cup in Russia is going to be my last tournament with the national team…,” he said.

“The criticisms today have added to what has happened over the last few years.”

The Barcelona star has featured 85 times for his country, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2012 European championship.
