After finishing second in their group behind Fenerbahce, the Red-Devils went on to beat St-Etienne, Rostov, Anderlecht and Celta Vigo, before beating Ajax 2-0 in the final.

The old Trafford based club finished sixth in last season’s English top flight league, meaning Europa League victory allowed the Red Devils a route into the Champions League.

The 24-year-old rejoined United from Juventus last year and his contribution to the English club in the Europa contest helped United lift the trophy for the first time in May.

“I am very happy to be the first one to win the Uefa Europa League Player of the Season award,” the 24-year-old said in a statement.
