Presidency Mulls Magu’s Replacement, Tips AIG Ali Amodu

There are indications that the Presidency may have finally settled for the removal of Ibrahim Magu, a deputy commissioner of police, as the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC.)

The move is part of the peace building between the executive and the Senate in particular.

Magu has been rejected twice by the Upper Legislative arm of the National Assembly over unfavorable reports by the State Security Service (SSS), which says Magu has integrity and temperament issues to lead the anti-graft commission.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met with Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara behind closed doors, in order to build synergy and foster a more robust relationship.

The All Progressives Party (APC) leadership also weighed in on the frosty relationship on Wednesday, and called on all political appointees of the executive to avoid any statement capable of deepening the animosity between the two arms of government.

Amodu retired as an Inspector General of Police in 2016 from the force, and is credited as a tough and detailed cop who led detectives to crack the Halliburton scandal and exposed those who benefited from the bribe sum.

Amodu had been tipped as far back as December to succeed Magu whose tenure has been contentious but was put on hold in the hope that the Senate was going to confirm him.

Until his retirement Amodu had held various posts and was incharge of the Special Investigation Panel that allegedly recovered over 19 SUVs, cars from top police brass during the tenure of Solomon Arase as IGPA.

He also investigated Senate President Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu over the forgery of the Senate standing rules.

A Presidency official told The Whistler that with a lot of pending issues such as the budget and confirmation of National Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Presidency wants to ensure it achieves much within the reminder of the time of the first tenure of the administration, therefore, does not want to be bugged down by personal battles.
