Rio 2016: No Condoms For You – NOC Tell Team Nigeria

Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC has told members of Team Nigeria that they will not be providing condoms for them at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

According to the NOC, members of the team who wish to satisfy their sexual desires at the games, should rely on the protective condoms that are to be made available by the organizers of the tournament.

Speaking ahead of the official launch of the online medium for the Games, Team Naija, in Abuja on Tuesday, the president of the committee, Engineer Habu Gumel, noted that it is the responsibility of the Rio Olympic organizers to provide condoms for the participants.

“We have no plan to travel to Rio with condoms because it is the responsibility of the organisers not the NOC to supply them to everybody in Rio during the Games,” Gumel said.

The committee further revealed arrangements towards the Olympic Day celebration commencing on July 2 across the states of the country.

The chairman of the Nigeria Sport for All Commission, Prince Henry Amike, who disclosed the arrangements said: “The Olympic Day Celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday July 2, 2016 in states that indicated interest to host the event. The education aspect of the event will hold on June 23-24 in Lagos with 5000 students participating.

“Olympic Day is an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activities in general, particularly for young people which allows them to learn about Olympic values and to put them into practice in their everyday life.

“In order to allow people of all age groups to participate in the celebration, the programme has been broken down in stages of 3km, 6km and 10km to accommodate everybody. The states that have so far indicated interest to organise the event are Bayelsa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Abia, Lagos, Imo, Adamawa, Edo, Delta, Katsina, Borno, Ogun, Rivers, Niger, Gombe, Kebbi, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Katsina, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kebbi and FCT while other states are still expected before the date of the event.

“We also want to use this medium to inform participants that Olympic Day celebration is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promises in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.

“The educational arm of the program, which will take place only in Lagos, children from various secondary schools have been invited to participate on the following programmes like art exhibition and dance, Olympic quiz competition and distribution of prices to winners, jogging and walking from designated route.”
