Following the conclusion of the Rio 2016 Olympic trials in Sapele, the Athletics Federation (AFN) of Nigeria has told the Ministry of Sports that they will send selected athletes to their respective homes, if funds are not released for the final preparations for next month Games.

This was according to a statement by AFN president, Solomon Ogba, who disclosed this in Sapele, stressing that the federation is yet to receive funding from the sports ministry for the last stage of preparations ahead of the Rio Olympics.

The statement noted that if nothing was forth coming, the athletes will be sent home. “I think as a federation we have done everything there is to be done. What happens from here I cannot say for now,” Ogba said.

“Even at the moment, we are not sure of sending a team to the world junior championships.

“We have our team already and are supposed to go on the phase two preparations. But if we don’t have money to run our camp then we will send the athletes home.”
