Rio Paralympics: Reps To Reward Team Nigeria With N50, 000 Each

Following their outstanding performance at the just concluded 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, members of House of Representatives have promised to give each member of team Nigeria the sum of N50, 000.

The physically-challenged athletes did the nation proud in Rio where they amassed a dozen medals, ending the competition as the number one team in Africa on the medals table.

Eight of the medals was gold while there were two silver as well as two bronze medals, guaranteeing Nigeria her best ever placement in the Paralympics; the highest mark being the 22nd position achieved in Sydney 2000.

The lawmakers led by Speaker Yakubu Dogara made the decision to reward the athletes during their plenary on Wednesday September 21st. The House also resolved to invite the paralympians to one of their sessions as a mark of honor.

The Green Chamber commended the paralympians for emerging the best delegates from Africa at the sporting event.

At the games, a total of six Nigerian athletes broke the World Records (WR) in their events. Powerlifting and athletics accounted for the WRs.

The gold medal winners include Ezuruike Roland, Kehinde Paul, Ejike Lucy, Onye Lauritta, Nwosu Ndidi, Omolayo Bose, Ugwunwa Flora, and Orji Josephine.

The silver medalists are Tijani Latifat and Oyema Esther while Innocent Nnamdi and Iyiazi Eucharia won bronze.
