The victory means the Swiss is two sets short of his all-time record streak, which he set between the third round in 2005 and the final in 2006 and has now won 32 consecutive sets at SW19.

He will play South African eighth seed Kevin Anderson or France’s Gael Monfils in the last eight on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the men’s category, Milos Raonic beat Mackenzie McDonald in four sets to reach the last eight for the third year in a row.

While in the women’s category, Seven-time champion Serena Williams defeated Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina with a 6-2 6-2 straightforward win.
